Here in Cornwall, it’s starting to look a lot like Christmas. As colder nights start drawing in the festive spirit starts to grow, making it the perfect time to enjoy the cosy season wrapped up at The Carlyon Bay Hotel.

Take to the ice and discover your love for wintertime with this typically seasonal activity. Ice skating is one of the most common winter-related activities and we can understand why with its nature. Escape to the wonder that is the Eden Project for their take on Ice skating and savour 40 minutes of putting your skills to the test as you glide and slide along the ice. Will your skating skills leave you feeling like Bambi on ice or will you walk away with hopes of one day being a professional skater?

For many of us, when we think about all that the festive season entails our minds often drift to the delight of Christmas lights. Whether you intentionally go out to find houses decked out in multicoloured lights, or accidentally, coming across this festive tradition feels you with joy, a visit to Charlestown will leave you full of warmth. 

Be enchanted by a trail of an underground tunnel of festive lights, featuring thousands of twinkling lights, explore the tunnels hidden beneath the 18th Century harbour in search of ice caves, ice waterfalls and giant icebergs. This passageway covers more than 100 metres with over 60,000 bulbs lighting the way. More details can be found here.

Journey through an enchanting 1-mile trail in the atmospheric Lost Gardens of Heligan. Follow the trail around the well-loved gardens, through tunnels, beneath the canopy, between the ancient trees and through history. Celebrate the beloved characters of the local community all illuminated within Heligan’s much-loved and iconic locations. 

Explore at your own pace, stop to savour the scents of the gardens as the smell of toasted marshmallows follows you along the route and enjoy seasonal takeaways and refreshments amid a truly festive backdrop. More details can be found here.

St Austell Torchlight Carnival

St Austell Torchlight Carnival

Come together with locals and visitors alike as St Austell comes to life under the influence of torchlight. This whole day of celebrations is the perfect time to reacquaint your love for chillier months as the festive spirit grows. 

Savour entertainment throughout the town from live bands, stalls, music and dancers and as the day grows dark countdown to the tremendous spectacle of the Torchlight Carnival parade. More details can be found here.

Get into the festive spirit with a Christmas market in the beautiful village of Charlestown. This annual event is always highly anticipated and well attended by locals and visitors alike. Based at the Penrice Academy, you’ll be truly spoilt for choice with many traders offering a range of gifts, paintings, jewellery, and home furnishings alongside food and drink stalls. 

There will also be entertainment from local choirs and bands who will sing you merrily on high. The venue is guaranteed to be warm and dry making it a cosy space to escape windswept landscapes and offers plentiful car parking. More details can be found here.

For over 100 years this little Cornish fishing village has lit up to celebrate Christmas. The Mousehole Harbour Lights have been a long-standing tradition in this Cornish fishing village dating back to 1963. Illuminating the village through December to early January with the initial light switch on taking place over a span of a couple of days.

The stunning light display at Mousehole is a must-see Christmas treat. The local community goes all out to put on a show both on land and sea, with twinkling lights reflecting off the water and sparkling throughout the village streets. More details can be found here.
